US Space Force selects 12 companies for Golden Dome orbital interceptor development

The US Space Force announced on April 25, 2026, that 12 companies are developing orbital interceptors for the Golden Dome defense initiative under Other Transaction Authority agreements worth up to $3.2 billion.

The Space Force selected a mix of established aerospace firms and newer technology companies

The roster includes Anduril Industries, Booz Allen Hamilton, General Dynamics Mission Systems, GITAI USA, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Quindar, Raytheon, Sci-Tec, SpaceX, True Anomaly, and Turion Space. These companies received 20 individual awards in late 2025 and early 2026.

Officials emphasize the agreements support early-stage development only

The Space Force stated the contracts are for technology demonstrations and early development, not full-scale production, which would require significantly higher funding. No details were released on each company’s specific role due to operational security requirements.

Some contractors bring spaceflight experience while others offer software and robotics expertise

SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman represent traditional aerospace capabilities. Anduril and True Anomaly are newer entrants with national security focus. Sci-Tec and Quindar contribute software skills, Turion provides space sensing technology, and GITAI USA originated in in-space robotics.

What is the Golden Dome initiative designed to defend against?

The Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative is a multilayer defense system intended to shield US territory from drone and ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile attacks.

Why did the Space Force apply Other Transaction Authority for these awards?

OTA agreements allow the Pentagon to bypass standard federal acquisition regulations, enabling a broader contractor pool and faster prototyping for programs like the Space-Based Interceptor initiative.
