Marine Biologist Says Stranded Humpback Whale in Baltic Sea Should Be Left Alone

The weakened humpback whale stranded in the Baltic Sea for over three weeks will not be subjected to further rescue attempts, according to leading marine biologist Fabian Ritter, who argues the animal must be left to its own fate.

Ritter, a 20-year member of the International Whaling Commission’s scientific committee and former marine protection lead at Whale and Dolphin Conservation, stated that after 20 days immobilized in shallow waters, the whale shows signs of severe muscle deterioration consistent with myopathy, making active intervention futile and potentially harmful.

Despite earlier efforts to assist the animal — including discussions of a makeshift corset made from sandbags to support its body — Ritter emphasized that the whale continues to surface and breathe on its own, indicating retained strength and autonomy, though its movement remains abnormal, with only the tail fin moving while it remains at the surface.

He noted that the whale’s refusal to dive or swim normally may stem from pain, injury, or the physiological toll of prolonged immobility, which has likely caused metabolic acidosis in its musculature, further reducing its ability to survive without human aid.

While hunger is not an immediate concern — humpbacks can survive weeks without food — the persistence of fishing net remnants in its mouth may prevent feeding, compounding its physical decline.

Ritter urged acceptance of two possible outcomes: either the whale regains strength independently or it is nearing the end of its life, stressing that continued human interference disregards the animal’s apparent will to survive on its own terms.

In contrast, public frustration over the rescue operation surfaced in statements from Jenna Wallace, who told NDR that officials and individuals involved in the response — including agricultural ministers, veterinarians, and two unnamed rescuers referred to as Sergio and Danny Firstclass — should be barred from future animal rescue missions due to perceived incompetence.

Her remarks, delivered during a live ticker update by BILD, reflected growing criticism of the coordination and decision-making during the prolonged effort, highlighting a rift between expert assessment and public sentiment over what constitutes appropriate intervention.

The situation underscores a broader ethical dilemma in wildlife rescue: when does well-intentioned human involvement become an impediment to natural processes, especially when expert judgment conflicts with public pressure to act?

Why did experts decide against further rescue efforts for the stranded whale?

Experts concluded that the whale’s prolonged immobility had likely caused severe muscle damage (myopathy), making recovery unlikely and further intervention potentially harmful, while noting the animal still showed signs of autonomy and strength.

Fabian Ritter emphasized that the whale was not in immediate danger of starvation and that its behavior suggested it was either healing on its own or accepting its fate, warranting non-interference.
