Extension Granted: Alfons Schuhbeck Remains Free Until September 2026 Amid Health Crisis

Alfons Schuhbeck, the 76‑year‑old former TV chef once celebrated for his work with FC Bayern Munich and high‑society events, remains outside prison despite a four‑year‑three‑month sentence for fraud, subsidy abuse, insolvency delay and tax evasion.

The Munich prosecutor’s office confirmed on 21 April 2026 that the suspension of his sentence has been extended until at least 4 September 2026, citing an expert medical opinion that he is currently unfit for incarceration, even in a prison hospital unit.

This marks the second extension since May 2025, when Schuhbeck was first released from custody after his conviction became final. His lawyers had disclosed during last year’s trial that he suffers from an incurable, progressive cancer affecting his lymph nodes, a condition that survived surgical intervention.

The expert report, commissioned by the prosecutors and reviewed by BILD, concluded that imprisoning Schuhbeck—even with access to medical facilities—would not be feasible. Both t‑online and BILD note that the decision is subject to immediate revocation should his health improve.

Schuhbeck’s financial troubles remain substantial. His insolvency administrator disclosed debts of approximately €27 million ($29 million), accumulated through a network of companies that had already collapsed when they applied for state coronavirus aid.

Despite his legal and medical situation, Schuhbeck continues to receive limited medical care, including hospital visits, and maintains personal connections. BILD reported that he still finds joy in visits from friends and occasional trips to the Säbener Straße to notice former colleagues at FC Bayern, a club he once catered for.

The prosecution emphasized that after the current deadline, a fresh assessment will determine whether the sentence will be resumed. Until then, the chef—once a fixture of German television cooking shows—lives under judicial supervision rather than behind bars.

Why was Alfons Schuhbeck’s prison sentence suspended?

His suspension is based on a medical expert’s finding that he is not fit for imprisonment due to an incurable cancer affecting his lymph nodes, which makes incarceration medically unfeasible even in a prison with healthcare facilities.

What happens after 4 September 2026?

The Munich prosecutor’s office will conduct a new evaluation of Schuhbeck’s health to decide whether the suspension of his sentence should be lifted and he returned to custody to serve the remainder of his four‑year‑three‑month term.
