Vincent Kompany will be absent from the touchline for FC Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on April 28. The Belgian manager triggered a one-match ban after receiving his third yellow card of the competition during Bayern’s 4-3 quarter-final victory over Real Madrid.
Referee Slavko Vinčić issued the caution in the first half of the Madrid clash. The booking followed Kompany’s aggressive protest to the fourth official regarding a foul on Josip Stanisic in the 42nd minute, shortly before Real Madrid scored to make it 3-2.
Max Eberl learned of the suspension during a live interview
Sporting Director Max Eberl didn’t know his coach was banned until DAZN moderator Laura Wontorra informed him during a post-match TV segment. Eberl’s immediate reaction was one of disbelief, asking „Is that so?“ while looking around for confirmation.
„We came into the dressing room and said: Great, no player is suspended. Now the coach is suspended. For God’s sake!“ Eberl told the broadcaster. Despite the surprise, he dismissed the specific foul that led to the booking, stating that while it felt like a foul to the team, the result—advancing to the semi-finals—was the only priority.
Kompany argues the penalty is too harsh for the new format
Kompany maintains his conduct remained respectful and his words were not incorrect. He questioned the severity of the punishment, arguing that the current Champions League format introduces more games but maintains an overly rigid disciplinary structure.
The manager had criticized the yellow card regulations even before the kickoff against Real Madrid. In the aftermath, he pointed out the inconsistency in how officials handle protests, noting that many people complain on the pitch without facing such consequences.
Bayern players and staff are treating the absence as a minor setback
Captain Manuel Neuer minimized the impact of the ban. He stated the situation doesn’t affect the players on the field and expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to perform without Kompany in the technical area.
Kompany hasn’t yet named which assistant will lead the team in the Parc des Princes. He told reporters on Wednesday that the coaching staff will decide on a replacement in the coming days, adding that the players are the ones who ultimately decide the game.
The ban is limited to the first leg in Paris. Kompany will return to the touchline for the decisive second leg at the Allianz Arena on May 6.
