One Piece on Netflix: is a second season planned?

ONE-PIECE SERIES. Netflix has released eight episodes of its One Piece series. Is a sequel in the form of a season 2 already planned?

[Mis à jour le 2 septembre 2023 à 9h00] Two days after the One Piece series went live NetflixFans were able to binge-watch all eight episodes of the first season. But we’ll have to be patient to see the rest. The second season is not yet confirmed for the time being: everything will depend on the number of viewers that will reach the series, which is one of the most expensive series in history at 18 million dollars per episode.

We’ll have to wait, therefore, for Netflix to confirm the release of a second season to rejoice. In any case, the manga offers plenty of storylines for a sequel. The finale of One Piece also heralds the arrival of a new antagonist in possible future episodes (Warning, spoilers). We can see Smoker from behind, a naval officer who has swallowed a devil fruit that surrounds him in smoke and who has made it his mission to capture Luffy. He is the main antagonist of the Loguetown arc in the manga.

If season 2 of the One Piece series is confirmed, we could also see new crew members like Chopper or Robin, but also Ace, Vivi and the terrifying Crocodile, the great villain and leader of Barockwerke. This should thus begin on the saga Alabasta. So it’s a very dense and eventful arc that would open up with Season 2, but it remains to be seen if changes are made!

So what about the early feedback from aficionados? On “What a slap and what a pleasure to rediscover One Piece like this,” we can read on the social network, “ackenyu Arata, who is absolutely bullish.” [greatest of all time, ndlr] in the role of Roronoa Zoro.” If the fans are convinced, the question now arises as to whether this adaptation will succeed in convincing even newcomers to the universe of Eiichiro Oda.

Critics’ opinions on the One Piece series

The media, who got to see the series before its release, were completely seduced by One Piece the Netflix. Such is the case of Allociné, who believes the series is “an unexpected success as much as it is gratifying, coupled with an adaptation fairly faithful to Eiichiro Oda’s manga”. BFM TV, in turn, pays tribute to the cast and in particular “the energy that Iñaki Godoy, the young interpreter of Luffy, perfectly brought to the screen”. However, the media regret a “disappointing staging”. The germanic, specializing in cinema news and streaming in the United States, for its part, judges this live-action adaptation of “Delight” and regrets that the series is not sufficiently “challenging” but remains “pure pleasure” and at the same time is “crazy”. Really cool.” For its part, the Hollywood Handle praised a “well-crafted experience that keeps viewers engaged for eight episodes.” For his part, the journalist for the English-language medium Screen Rant, who “didn’t know anything about Universe,” was “still very touched by the characters and the energy of the series.”

Does Eiichiro Oda like Netflix’s One Piece series?

There is one person who had to be happy with the Netflix series: Eiichiro Oda, creator of One Piece. The mangaka admitted in a letter shared on the streaming platform’s social media on July 22 that he “didn’t make any concessions” on the series, without really giving his opinion on the final portrayal. However, he wanted to reassure himself about the quality of the project: “So much work has been done: from the involvement of the actors to the development of the universe, including the costumes, the dialogues and everything that goes with a live action.” .. The fact that so many people worked on this project was a celebration in itself.”

However, he admitted that scenes that he felt were not up to par were returned. He didn’t forget to have a thought for Luffy’s interpreter, Iñaki Godoyn, “who embodies him beautifully”. “The producers and crew are live-action professionals and are also true One Piece fans. The more you know about the manga, the more love there is in this version. Eyes.”

The manga took some liberties with me

As other disappointing live-action manga adaptations have shown in the past, adapting a Japanese comic can be a real headache. Eiichiro Oda, author of the world’s best-selling Shonen series, was involved in the development of the series, but that doesn’t detract from the freedoms and differences in screenwriting.

This first season of the One Piece series largely adapts the East Bue arc, i.e. the first 12 volumes of the manga. Notable changes, however, include the more prominent role occupied by Koby, Luffy’s friend from the Navy. Additionally, the character Garp is introduced earlier in the series while he doesn’t interact with his grandson until much later in the manga. The series is also more vivid in these violent scenes than the manga could have been, at least at the beginning. This is certainly the reason why the series is not recommended on Netflix for people aged 13 and over.

It is not yet known whether a sequel will appear.
