German economy shows slight Q1 2026 growth despite Middle East tensions, Bundesbank reports

Italian officials have rejected German political pressure to relocate UniCredit’s headquarters should it acquire Commerzbank, calling the idea self-evidently unacceptable.

The pushback came after SPD deputy faction leader Armand Zorn argued that any merged entity must be based in Frankfurt, a demand met with swift dismissal by Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti following a cabinet meeting. UniCredit reiterated that its group headquarters remains in Milan and will stay there, with no internal discussions contradicting that position.

Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp responded sharply to criticism from UniCredit’s CEO Andrea Orcel, whom she accused of presenting an uncoordinated plan after 18 months of engagement that nonetheless failed to grasp the core drivers of her bank’s business model.

She called it astonishing that Orcel needed over a year to propose a strategy lacking basic understanding of Commerzbank’s operations, despite regular investor meetings throughout that period.

The exchange highlights a growing rift between the two banks as takeover talks continue, with national pride and strategic autonomy emerging as central fault lines.

Meanwhile, Siemens Energy gained 5.7% on strong quarterly results from US rival GE Vernova, which beat expectations across power and electrification segments and raised its outlook, noting only minimal impact from the Iran war on its business.

GE Vernova shares rose 12% in early US trading as analysts pointed to its resilience amid broader Middle East tensions.

The Bundesbank reported that Germany’s economy likely saw slight seasonally adjusted growth in Q1 2026 despite ongoing crises and headwinds from the Middle East conflict, with official GDP data due from the Federal Statistical Office on April 30.

Markets may be underestimating Federal Reserve easing prospects, according to Danske Bank analysts Kirstine Kundby-Nielsen and Jens Peter Sorensen, who expect two more 25-basis-point cuts in September and December — more than the current pricing of just 9 basis points for the year.

Key Context The Iran war continues to influence financial markets, though its direct impact on firms like GE Vernova remains limited so far.

Why is Italy resisting a German headquarters for a potential UniCredit-Commerzbank merger?

Italy views the headquarters as a non-negotiable anchor of UniCredit’s identity and control, rejecting any suggestion that political pressure from Berlin could override corporate sovereignty.
