American teacher Hope Carrasquilla, principal of Tallahassee Classical School in Florida, is about to receive an award from the municipality of Florence, who is being forced to resign after a lesson about the Renaissance in which she was featured Michelangelo’s David considered “pornographic” by students’ parents. This was announced by Mayor Dario Nardella during a video call from New York.
Nardella has also announced that he would like to invite the sacked headmaster to Florence to see with her in person the statue of David kept in the Galleria dell’Accademia.
Nardella then wrote on Facebook: “A Florida teacher had to quit for showing students photos of Michelangelo’s David. Confusing art with pornography is just ridiculous. I will personally invite the teacher to Florence to pay tribute to her on behalf of the city. Art is civilization and whoever teaches it deserves respect”.
