Focus flexed muscles at the big presentation of the new season in its theaters this morning. The group of companies, which manages the Goya, Romea, Villarroel and Condal theaters in Barcelona, will offer a total of 14 own productions and 15 co-productions over the period 2023-24, with a budget for theatrical activities of 14 million euros. Among the highlights of a great artistic offer is the return to Barcelona of Josep Maria Flotats (84 years old), who will represent the show he himself is directing at the Romea Voltaire/Rosseau denied it.
As usual, Focus President Daniel Martínez de Obregón took over the helm of the event to highlight the good results of last season. “We lived a course full of artistic delights,” congratulated Martínez, highlighting the surprisingly rapid and massive return of the public to the stands after the pandemic. He described the season as a “success,” “with an overwhelming viewership that is the record in Focus history.” It drew 410,000 viewers and grossed EUR 9 million, an increase of 20% and 30% respectively over the previous season.

Romero the night of the living dead, apostilled with a paradoxical and at the same time frightening “live!”; Directed by Roger Julia.

In his speech, Martínez underlined the importance of the two cultural projects supported by Focus, the Àfora Thought Hub and the Cooltiva’t initiative, which bring performing culture closer to schools and academia. He also highlighted the “huge success” of the International Congress of Theater Spectators, held last October and organized by Focus. He took the opportunity to announce the creation of a new center for theater and arts training, a project called Gènesis, a nod to the theater group that gave birth to Focus.

Martínez, who expressed confidence in how well the season will go for the industry as a whole, warned that any threat to freedom of expression and creativity “will make us belligerent”.
