“Tapie”, the Netflix miniseries that looks back on the extraordinary fate of “Nanard”.

This is one of the many back-to-school events in France. The series has been announced for a long time tape, in seven episodes, will air on the Netflix platform from this Tuesday, September 12th. Designed and produced by Olivier De Mangel and Tristan Séguéla, it is dedicated to the meteoric rise of French businessman Bernard Tapie.

A big mouth, a symbol of the 1980s: Bernard Tapie. And to play him requires a renowned actor, Laurent Laffite, as well as colossal resources. The aim: to tell the story of a harrowing life over three decades.

On paper, the Netflix miniseries everything was fine. What was not expected was a controversy that would boost the advertising campaign and a small hint of scandal.

Laurent, the son of Bernard Tapie, spoke out against the project, shouting treason and criticizing the use of the term “con artist” attached to his father’s name.

The series is now more nuanced. Between myth and reality, it paints the portrait of an amazing man, an ambitious man, often grotesque but irresistible, played by a barely made-up Laurent Laffite.

Tapie is always friendly and never has an idea. He is portrayed as a kind of Géo Trouvetou of business who, at the age of 40, finds enough to satisfy his taste for glitter and cameras, first as boss of the legendary soccer club Olympique de Marseille, then as politician, then as city minister.

Bernard Tapie himself rejected the project shortly before his death. A real shame for a man who dreamed of becoming a movie star.
