From GIULIA ZIINO

Editorial news, maps and advice for readers aged 5 to 13 and their educators, teachers and parents. Featuring the voices of Alfa and David Nicholls and four unpublished stories

Girls and boys, let’s talk about love. And of anger, jealousy, shyness, happiness. In short, about feelings. Simply? Not exactly. How do you explain to little ones – children and, help!, pre-adolescents and a little beyond – what this ball of emotions is capable of carrying you up, turning you upside down and then crashing down in an instant? Furthermore, how can we address the related and thorny questions of consensus, the no’s that we adults also have to learn to recognize and accept, the walls of stereotypes that still need to be torn down? Inside and outside, the youngest face the storm every day, With social media everything becomes faster and more limitless, but certainly not easier. For this reason, the girls’ and boys’ reading this spring decided to talk about love. The junior supplement – created by the editorial team of la Lettura in collaboration with Pierdomenico Baccalario’s Book on a Tree agency – returns with a new edition, on newsstands on Sunday April 7th in the Corriere and as a preview in the from Saturday de la Lettura app , all dedicated to feelings, a universe to explore through books but not only.

Born as a useful tool for young readers and for those – parents, teachers, librarians, educators, grandparents… – who accompany them on their journey of self-discovery of the world, the Letturina – that is her code name – that once again betrays his vocation not. So here are cards – also pull-out ones: a crossing story to learn how to move happily at a party, a colorful centerfold with the list of emotions and the associated bibliography – stories, testimonies, suggestions, curiosities. A report on Romanticism, the contemporary literary genre than to the intimate feelings of romance unites the distant horizons of fantasy, populated by dragons and magic. A guide to navigating the real and slippery world of today’s technology, where everything comes, even feelings geolocated, shared, tagged, with too many risks to privacy. A loving exploration of the world of art and nature (animals and yes also plants, which like us can be passionate, shy, lively…). Then illustrations, cartoons, two anniversaries to remember and honor (Sofia’s worldJostein Gaarder’s philosophical bestseller, published thirty years ago, and Mafalda, Quino’s rebellious little girl, now a gorgeous sixty-year-old).

And of course lots of reading tips for everyone, from 5 to 13 years old, but not only: Books, manga, comics (and video games, films, TV series), always in the name of love. Classics and editorial novelties: Letturina appears on the eve of one of the most important events in children’s publishing, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which takes place from April 8th to 11th and we wanted to spread it with ideas (not only in Italian…) on titles hot off the press – illustrated books, novels, graphic novels – with ten must-have spring articles for reading ages from zero to 14 years not to be missed.

And then the voices. To talk about how he experiences feelings, joy and fears, we asked a man from 2000 who recently sang on the stage of Sanremo (also in an emotional duet with senior Roberto Vecchioni): Alfa – aka Andrea De Filippi –, the revelation of the festival who, in the reading for girls and boys, talks about how music and life intertwine, about fear and anger, about his and our need for normality after the Covid years, about the bullying he suffered as a child, about how to be inspired with love. And he tells us six songs that are particularly close to his heart. From the emotions of a very young person to love before it is celebrated on social media David Nicholls, the English writer and author of the bestseller Once Recently brought to the small screen by Netflix, Letturina tells the story of how Emma and Dexter court each other without the help of cell phones. From books to screen and back. Alice Rohrwacher, director, talks about her debut in children’s literature and the character she invented for her, a barn owl with a meaningful name: Gianni Barba.

As is tradition, at the end of this Spring Letturina – before a page dedicated to the nearby Bologna Fair and its main themes – there is a final section with stories linked through a game of references: there are four and they are signed by the four Archer sisters – Ella, Serena, Jude and Lou – a collective of authors who created the Romantasy saga under a pseudonym The hidden society, is currently being published. Everything starts with a train. Incorrect. But maybe…
