Matt Groening turns 70: his degree in journalism, how the Simpsons were born, 7 secrets

Matt Groening, cartoonist and father of The Simpsons (and subsequent animated series Futurama and Disenchantment), turns 70 today. He was born on February 15, 1954 in Portland, Oregon and is the third child of Margaret Ruth Wiggum and Homer Philip Groening. He has three sisters and a brother: Mark (1950), Patty (1952), Lisa (1956) and Maggie (1958). He graduated from Evergreen State College in Olympia with a degree in journalism in 1977, and that’s not the only oddity about him.
