Hamburg A7 and Elbtunnel Fully Closed Tonight Through Monday for Tunnel Control Center Construction

The Autobahn 7 and Elbtunnel in Hamburg will be fully closed from tonight at 10 p.m. Until Monday morning at 5 a.m. Due to construction work on a new tunnel control center and traffic computer update.

The closure affects the stretch between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Heimfeld interchanges, including the Elbtunnel, with access ramp closures beginning as early as 9 p.m. At Volkspark, Bahrenfeld, Othmarschen, Waltershof, Hausbruch and Heimfeld.

Detours will route traffic via the A1, A21 and B205, with clear signage using LED displays to guide drivers around the city through the Horst junction, Bargteheide and Wahlstedt.

For southbound travelers heading into Hamburg, authorities recommend exiting at Heimfeld and using the B75 and A255 over the Elbe bridges, even as northbound drivers should use the airport detour via B432, B433 and Alsterkrugchaussee.

The work is tied to the long-term expansion of the A7 to eight lanes in Hamburg, a project that includes the construction of a two-kilometer noise protection tunnel in Altona, scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

Currently, only one lane is available inbound at the Horst junction until July, creating a bottleneck that forces northbound drivers to navigate two consecutive traffic chokepoints on the A7 within the city.

Key Detail: The next major closure is planned for May 9–10, coinciding with Hamburg’s harbor birthday festival, when only the southbound lanes between Stellingen and Heimfeld will be shut while northbound traffic remains open.

Additional extended closures are scheduled throughout 2026, including 55-hour full shutdowns in June, September and October, some of which will involve deck work on the Altona tunnel and integration of the tunnel control center in Schnelsen.

While the Hamburger Abendblatt noted overlapping events this weekend — including a FC St. Pauli match, a demonstration and a concert by Howard Carpendale — its primary focus remained on practical guidance for navigating the disruption, echoing the operational details provided by NDR.
