Volvo breaks its monthly sales record in March with 78,970 vehicles sold, up 25%

Volvo Cars achieved sales of 78,970 vehicles in March, a 25% increase compared to the same month last year and a historic high for global sales in a single month, the Swedish manufacturer said in a statement on Thursday.

After publishing its record sales results, Volvo Cars rose 6.7% to 41.59 Swedish krona per share (3.62 euros) on the Stockholm Stock Exchange this Thursday. So far this year, the company has seen an increase of 27.73% and a market capitalization of almost 124,000 million Swedish krona (almost 10,800 million euros).

Group brand Geely says that both Volvo Cars’ new all-electric compact SUV, the EX30, and good commercial results in Europe and the US contributed to this increase in sales.

Specifically, sales of Volvo Cars’ electrified models with fully electric or plug-in hybrid propulsion increased by 24% compared to the same period last year to 33,558 units sold, which corresponds to 42% of the total number of vehicles sold worldwide. Fully electric vehicles accounted for 23% of all vehicles sold in March.

In addition, total sales in the first quarter of 2024 amounted to 182,687 vehicles sold worldwide, an increase of 12% compared to the same period last year.

By region, Volvo says sales in Europe rose 33% in March compared to the same month last year, reaching 39,756 units.

Electric vehicles recorded a similar growth rate (34%) in the region with 24,856 units sold. Sales of electrified vehicles accounted for 63% of all vehicles sold in Europe in March.

15,315 Volvo vehicles were sold in the US, an increase of 50% compared to March 2023. Sales of electric vehicles increased by 25% compared to the same period last year; These vehicles accounted for 24% of all vehicles sold in the United States.

In contrast, sales in China were 14,005 units, 21% more than in the same period last year. In March, 1,039 electrified vehicles were sold in China, 28% less than in the same month last year.

In March 2024 there were the Volvo and the XC90 with 10,826 (2023: 9,828 vehicles).

“These figures reflect the strength of our strategy and our product portfolio, which includes fully electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids in the right combination,” says Björn Annwall, commercial director and deputy CEO of Volvo Cars.
