The documentary “On the Wrong Side” by Luca Miniero tells the reunion of the former children who survived the tunnel accident in 1983

Forty years ago they were children on a school trip from Naples to Lake Garda. They were 13 years old. It was April 26, 1983, the bus was driving through Florence. Suddenly the driver loses control, collides with a truck, the bus skids and overturns. 13 students died, those sitting on the left side of the center. AND“The Tragedy of Melarancio.”, one of the worst traffic accidents in Italian history, so named after the name of the tunnel in which the collision occurred. Today, Forty years after this tragic event, the survivors meet for lunch in their hometown of Naples. A special reunion, bitter but full of life, told in the documentary “On the wrong side” by Luca Miniero, produced by Viola Film and Luca Miniero, presented in Italian competition at the 64th Festival dei Popoli in Florence, an international documentary film event scheduled until November 12th. A powerful documentary.

After the initial curiosity of seeing each other again, the classmates relive the school anecdotes of those years, followed by the natural spontaneity of a group of old friends The thread of memories and without any coercion from the director. We eat, we drink, we laugh. We understand how difficult the lives of those who remain, but we also understand how precious the lives of those who are saved. The documentary tells a dramatic event, but it is incredibly full of life. As we eat between the dining room and the terrace overlooking Naples, nostalgic and heartbreaking memories of the accident and of the classmates who are no longer with us follow. There are those who still feel it guilty of changing seats shortly before the accident, there are those who remember the songs that were heard back then, there are those who carry the ever-open wounds of their soul. The pages of diaries scroll by, the class photos scroll by, the lives of the survivors intertwine with those of those who are gone forever.

A moving work signed by Miniero, author of several campaigns for Rai and the major Italian companies. For the cinema he made award-winning short films (Locarno Film Festival) such as “Small Things of Unquantifiable Value” and “Armando’s Dream”. As a soloist, in directing and writing, he has signed several films, including “Benvenuti al Sud”, nominated for 10 David di Donatello. He recently filmed the television film “Napoli Milionaria” with Massimiliano Gallo, which will be broadcast on Rai 1 in December 2023, and is currently busy filming the television series “Vincenzo Malinconio 2” produced by Viola Film.
