Sardegna supports the “Domus de Janas” application for UNESCO World Heritage Site

AGI – The Region will support the application of the site “Art and Architecture of Prehistoric Sardinia, Domus de Janas” for inclusion in the Italian list of proposals deposited at the World Heritage Center UNESCO. Alghero, head of the Network of Municipalities of the Domus de Janas, and the CeSim/Aps – Center for the Study of Identity and Memory, presented it to the Ministry of Culture, General Secretariat Service II of the UNESCO Office.

A memorandum of understanding was signed this morning Cagliari from the Regional Councilor for Culture, Andrea Biancareddu, the provinces of Sassari, Nuoro, Oristano and the metropolis of Cagliari, as well as the many municipalities involved: in addition to Alghero, Anela, Ardauli, Arzachena, Bonorva, Castelsardo, Cheremule, Goni, Mamoiada , Mores, Oliena, Olmedo , Oniferi, Ossi, Ozieri, Porto Torres, Putifigari, Sassari, Sedilo, Sennori, Villanova Monteleone, Villaperuccio, Villa Sant’Antonio.

The document was also signed by Regional Superintendence of Sardiniathe superintendence of archaeology, fine arts and landscape for the provinces Sassari and Nuoro, the supervisory authority for archaeology, fine arts and landscape of the metropolis of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and southern Sardinia, as well as the regional directorate of the museums of Sardinia.

The region will invest over a period of three years 300 thousand euros for the benefit of Cesimo/Aps and the Network of Municipalities of the Domus del Janas, to promote the candidacy and prepare a technical-scientific dossier on the 35 sites to be secured and subsequently managed. In addition, in the three-year period 2022-2025, 500,000 euros were made available annually to the affected municipalities for the security of the locations.

Sardinia currently boasts of recognizing the universal value of some material goods (“Su Nuraxi” by Barumini 1997) and intangible elements: Canto a tenore 2008, Li Candareri di Sassari – Macchine a Shoulder 2013, Muretti a dry 2018) of its cultural heritage. Since 2017, the “Tepilora, Rio Posada and Montalbo Biosphere Reserve” has also been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Additional sites, assets and elements have been proposed for inclusion on the tangible and intangible world heritage lists. They are included in Provisional List II Sulcis Iglesientethe La Maddalena archipelago and the islands of the Bocche di Bonifacio, the island of Asinara and the ponds of the Gulf of Oristano and the Sinis Peninsula island of Mal di Ventre.

The aim of the application process is to determine, in addition to the actual value of the location/asset/element, the perception of the location/asset/element by the reference communities and the resulting commitment to preserving the location/asset/element for future generations. Italy has the largest number of sites (59) inscribed on the World Heritage List
