RTL Group acquires Sky Deutschland to launch unified streaming platform with 12.3 million subscribers

The European Commission has approved RTL Group’s acquisition of Sky Deutschland, clearing the way for a new streaming entity with 12.3 million subscribers to challenge Amazon and Netflix in Germany.

The deal, announced ten months ago, involves an initial cash payment of 150 million euros ($163 million) from RTL to Sky, with potential additional payments of up to 377 million euros ($410 million) if RTL’s share price reaches 70 euros. Currently trading at around 38 euros, the stock would need to nearly double for the full contingent consideration to trigger.

Under the merged structure, RTL, RTL+, Sky and Wow will operate under one roof, aiming to offer a unified platform spanning news, premium entertainment and live sport. Stephan Schmitter, CEO of RTL Deutschland, stated the goal is to provide innovative and compelling local offerings across all channels while placing viewers at the center of operations.

RTL plans to expand free-to-air football broadcasts significantly

Schmitter emphasized that Sky will remain the home of Bundesliga rights but confirmed plans to increase free-to-air football on RTL. Previously, Sky sublicensed only one Bundesliga match per half-season to free-to-air TV. New information indicates RTL can now broadcast up to five matches per half-season — totaling ten per season — during the current rights period.

This shift addresses fan frustration over fragmented streaming access. Schmitter noted audiences face confusion from the current subscription landscape and said the merged group aims to offer clear, simple and attractive options for every budget.

DFB-Pokal and Europa League rights see expanded distribution

All 63 DFB-Pokal matches will be available via RTL+ from the upcoming season at the current price of 9.99 euros ($10.80). The 2027/28 DFB-Pokal final will air on free-to-air RTL for the first time.

Sky customers gain access to Europa League matches, which previously aired exclusively on RTL. This reciprocal arrangement broadens sports availability across both platforms without requiring additional subscriptions for existing users.

Schmitter described his reaction to the Commission’s approval at 18:40 as emotionally comparable to celebrating Luis Diaz’s 3:3 equalizer for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid, underscoring the personal significance of the milestone.

Both outlets confirmed that current RTL+ and Sky subscription packages will stay in place initially, with no immediate alterations to pricing or content tiers for existing customers.

Will RTL+ prices increase after the Sky takeover?

Sources indicate existing Abo-Modelle remain initially unchanged, with no mention of planned price adjustments for RTL+ or Sky subscriptions in the near term.

How does this affect Amazon and Netflix’s position in the German streaming market?

The merged entity aims to directly challenge Amazon and Netflix by combining RTL’s reach with Sky’s premium content, though sources do not specify projected market share impacts or subscriber growth targets.
