Roberto Saviano on Instagram: “I want to make my library public, but Italy is a country that is the enemy of books.”

On social media, he calls for people to save his “treasure”: a collection of thirteen thousand volumes, accumulated over the years, which he would like to make publicly available.

The writer Roberto Saviano explains the reasons for his choice in an Instagram story and opens a contact box for everyone who would like to welcome his books: “Here is my library, where I have collected around 13,000 volumes over the course of my life.” It is my darling; They are all books that I have studied, that I did not inherit, but they are all mine, purchased or received. Due to my very difficult life situation, I no longer know how to deal with it: I move often and it is becoming more and more difficult to manage my movements and my treasure. That’s why I have a dream: to turn this collection into a public library where I can continue to learn, because I don’t want to be completely separated from my books. So if there is anyone in Italy or abroad who would like to welcome you, contact me.”

So Saviano speaks of a life in constant motion, which is certainly anything but monotonous: just think of the recent events in which he was involved in a libel trial against Giorgia Meloni, after which the writer was fined a thousand euros. or the cancellation of his program “Insider – Face to face with crime”, a program about mafias that was supposed to have been broadcast from November 4th, but which, according to Saviano, was canceled due to state censorship. Fabio Fazio also expressed his opinion on Saviano’s exclusion from Rai and described the decision as absurd: “Roberto is one of the greatest contemporary intellectuals, a writer protected by the state, but who is not allowed to appear on state television, that is absurd.”

And also on social media, Saviano takes the opportunity to denounce, in a certain way, the absurdity of the Italian situation: “I know that Italy is a country that is the enemy of books, that’s why I appeal abroad too, but I too. “Know that there are many good librarians and booksellers: write to me about the possibility of making my library public.”

The reference is veiled but present: where the state is the enemy of books, Saviano appeals to the honesty of private individuals, of individual citizens. The call for change is addressed to them again.
