Rapper Toomaj Salehi sentenced to death for supporting protests following the death of Mahsa Amini

The Revolutionary Court had accused Toomaj Salehi of “incitement to riot, assembly, conspiracy, propaganda against the system and incitement to unrest,” according to his lawyer.

An Iranian court has sentenced to death a famous Iranian rapper who has been imprisoned for more than a year and a half for supporting the 2022 protest movement sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, local media reported on Wednesday, April 24.

The Revolutionary Court of Isfahan (…) sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death for corruption on earth“, one of the most serious allegations in Iran, said the singer’s lawyer, Amir Raisian, quoted by the Shargh daily.

Nine people executed

The 33-year-old rapper was arrested in October 2022. He had supported, with his songs and on social networks, the protest movement that was triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurd arrested by the police on September 16, 2022. Moral accusations that accused him of violating the strict dress code for women. Foreign artists then supported him out of fear of a death penalty.

Protests in Iran in October and November 2022 left several hundred people dead, including members of the security forces, and thousands arrested before they subsided. According to NGOs, nine people were executed in connection with this uprising.
