Pedro Piqueras receives the Television Academy’s Jesús Hermida Lifetime Achievement Award

The Iris Awards, now known as the Jesús Hermida Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrate 25 years of history in this edition and will be presented on January 16th at an event at the Gran Teatro Caixabank Príncipe Pío in Madrid.

In previous competitions, this prize, previously called “A Whole Life”, was awarded to important personalities of the television world such as Jesús Hermida, Miguel de la Quadra Salcedo, Antonio Mercero, Chicho Ibáñez Serrador, Josefina Molina and Matías Prats Sr. , José de las Casas, Pedro Amalio López, Emilio Aragón “Miliki” or Rosa María Calaf.

It has also been welcomed by personalities such as Rosa María Mateo, Concha Velasco, José Ángel de la Casa, José María Íñigo, Laura Valenzuela, María Teresa Campos, Mayra Gómez Kemp, Fernando García de la Vega, Paloma Gómez Borrero, Xavier Sardá, Ana, among others Blanco, Matías Prats, Manuel Campo Vidal and José Luis Balbín. In its last edition, the Academy honored journalist Mercedes Milá with the “Jesús Hermida Lifetime Achievement Award”.

Extensive career

Pedro Piqueras is one of the country’s best-known journalists and can look back on an extensive career in radio and television. After graduating in journalism from the Complutense University, he started working at Radio Exterior de España in 1977. He later moved to RNE, where he heads the weekend news and the 24-hour program.

In 1986, the journalist began directing and presenting the two o’clock news programs on RNE-Radio 1. Later, in 1988, he directed the second edition of Telediario on TVE and in 1993 moved to Antena 3 to anchor and direct the 21st :00 p.m. News, a position he left in September 1996 to take over as head of Public Mirror.

Until the 2001/02 season he was responsible for presenting Noticias Fin de Semana on Antena 3 TV, where he celebrated the premiere of the morning magazine “A plena luz” in September 2002. In the 2002 and 2003 seasons he hosted the program “Seven Days, Seven Nights” on the same channel. A year later, in October 2004, the debate program “Enfoque” premiered on La 2.

On the other hand, he was also the director of Radio Nacional de España from May 2004 to January 2006, then he was appointed director of Informativos Telecinco and has hosted the station’s prime-time news program until today.

In 2016, he was one of the moderators of the “Four Debate” organized by the Television Academy between the candidates for president of the government Mariano Rajoy, Pedro Sánchez, Pablo Iglesias and Albert Rivera.

Throughout his professional career, Piqueras has been honored with various awards, including an “Ondas Award”, three “Golden Antennas”, the “Gold Medal of Castile-La Mancha” and the “Best Professional Career Award of the International Press Club”. “, including the “First Amendment Award from the Spanish Eisenhower Fellowship Association” and the “Vanity Fair Journalist of the Year Award” 2022.
