French comics that are equally clinical and merciless The killer impressed David Fincher so much that the director of Seven et Fight Club adapted it for Netflix. While waiting for the film’s next release, the comic’s screenwriter, Matz, talks to us about his love of funk and jazz, a relative rarity in the rock-heavy ninth generation.

What was the first record you bought with your own money?

Life La Té Raid, a 45-rpm by the Gramacks (1978), a Dominican group very popular in Martinique, where I spent my childhood. They had a great singer, Jeff Joseph. This song has a social side with very festive rhythms.

How do you like to listen to music?

Vinyls! I remained loyal to them. I also buy certain albums on CD to save my records.

What was the last record you bought?

I was in Spain for a comic convention. I found a Dizzy Gillespie with Arturo Sandoval, a Lalo Schifrin with George Benson and a Branford Marsalis that I didn’t have.

Or do you prefer listening to music?

At home at work or in the car. I mainly listen to radio while I work. I’m a fan of funk and jazz, for me it’s a bit the same. I work with music that I already know. If I listened to music I didn’t know, my mind would be more interested in music than work!

Is there a song you’re embarrassed to listen to?

There is none. You shouldn’t be ashamed!

What’s the record that everyone loves and you hate?

I don’t hate any particular records, but artists like Queen or Johnny Hallyday!

There are many ! I would say a cameo or a Harry James.

Which cover would you frame at home?

There are many of these, especially in jazz, but also in funk in a more charged genre. I would say Angel of the Ohio Player.

Do you prefer music on records or in concert?

I really like both, although I sometimes have problems with live recordings. At the Bataclan I saw Joe Sample, a pianist I admire. In concert it was extraordinary. I was good friends with Leon Ware, who produced the album I Want you by Marvin Gaye. He was fantastic in concert!

What song would you like to play at your funeral?

A good cameo, without a doubt!

What hard drive do you share with the person you live with?

My wife is allergic to funk, but there is one exception: Let’s stay Together d’Al Green.

What is your favorite film music?

That from The hotspot with John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis and Taj Mahal. And that fromOnce upon a time in the West.

Which group would you like to have belonged to?

Miniature! Or maybe Maze, they’re even cooler.

A song that always makes you cry?

mine’ de Maze.

A song that makes you angry?

Angry with rage, it’s strong… We are the winners from Queen. One of my sons likes Queen. Every time I make fun of him by telling him it sucks! Luckily he has very eclectic tastes and loves Cameo!
