“Due to competition from television and platforms, people are not going online anymore movie theater. We all seem half sick, we don’t want to go out anymore, we don’t go to places in person anymore, we lock ourselves at home. I’m very sorry for that because it means a deterioration in human status,” the director told Adnkronos Liliana Cavaniabout to walk the red carpet in Venice to receive it Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement and are celebrating her 90th birthday at the Lido – she was born a few months late on January 12th.
“Since the birth of theatre, from Greece to ancient Rome, there has always been an opportunity to share common things,” explains the director, who will also be giving a cinema masterclass in Venice and presenting her latest film. “The Order of Time” – And that is of great importance. We all look at it together, we comment, and that allows us to connect with each other, to buy something, that’s a value that also benefits the human psychologically.” Compared to when Cavani started of being an active protagonist, “cinema, like all other things, has changed a lot.” In my town of Carpi, there used to be four or five cinemas, now there are none – he says to Adnkronos – but It’s nice to go to the cinema togetherBe together when the lights go out and find each other when the lights come on again. Focusing on one thing with others is enriching.”
For the 90-year-old filmmaker, the Golden Lion for his lifetime achievement in Venice is “a gift, I didn’t think about it at all and I didn’t expect it either. I’m happy about this attention, it’s always nice.” To receive an award there, because Venice is a very important place. I have that a connection with Venice“I went there for my first film job, a 1965 documentary for Rai,” she explains. The director of masterpieces such as “The Night Porter” follows the events of the Hollywood screenwriters and actors strike which could put the lagoon event in trouble. “I understand the reasons,” he remarks to Adnkronos. “The need to share the profits a little more and better doesn’t hurt, also as an incentive to attract people to do this work, both technically and artistically. I hope and believe that they will find an agreement”.
Finally, the ninety-year-old director from Carpi made an appeal to the government and the Minister of Culture via Adnkronos Gennaro Sangiuliano, who will be a guest at the Venice Film Festival: “What would I ask Minister Sangiuliano? To do more communication in schools to teach history, which is the center of everything and is very important for us. It was all filmed, there is.” Images of part of World War I and all of World War II. And then there are so many documentaries to show the kids.” The director of masterpieces like The Night Porter concludes, “One afternoon a week should be devoted to history and documentaries. Today we read very little, so I would say it is essential.”
Immediately Minister’s reply: “Liliana Cavani opens an open door for me: The study of history is fundamental – Dice Sangiuliano – Knowing the past allows us to give meaning to our being and a path to our becoming. For this reason, since the beginning of my mandate I have been working so passionately on this subject that I have written several books of historical character and since the beginning of my mandate I have been committed to promoting it as much as possible, starting with the Italian Risorgimento and our 20th Century Century and got around to organizing a conference on Mazzini at the Collegio Romano.” And he adds: “I said History at the heart of the MiC institutes Starting with libraries and archives, but not forgetting the museums, as evidenced by the exhibitions on Italian magazines of the 20th century in the Uffizi Gallery or the permanent tour on the history of Italy “The Casket of Memory” in the Central State Archives.
