John Blackwell committed to Duke on Tuesday, choosing the Blue Devils over other suitors after a visit that cemented his decision.
The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists for Wisconsin last season, earning third-team All-Big Ten honors while shooting 39 percent from three-point range.
Blackwell told ESPN the connection with Coach Jon Scheyer developed through weeks of conversation, saying it „just felt right“ and that Duke presented the right situation for his goals.
He highlighted the program’s pitch of freedom and opportunity, noting he wants to be a draft pick and help win a national championship, which aligns with his dream.
Duke’s backcourt will include returning players Caleb Foster and Cayden Boozer, plus five-star recruit Deron Rippey Jr., giving Blackwell multiple playmaking options alongside Scheyer’s system.
Blackwell said he views himself as a point guard and expects the deep guard rotation to push everyone daily, creating matchup problems for opponents.
The commitment comes as Duke reloads after losing projected top-five pick Cameron Boozer and likely first-rounder Isaiah Evans to the NBA draft, while Maliq Brown has exhausted eligibility.
Freshman Nikolas Khamenia entered the portal and transferred to UConn, but Duke gained stability with the return of honorable mention All-ACC big man Patrick Ngongba II.
Cayden Boozer, Foster and potentially Dame Sarr are also expected to return, adding depth to a roster undergoing significant turnover.
