Cinema release on January 3rd

♦ Iris and the men **

by Caroline Vidal

French film, 1h38

Iris, in her 40s, has everything she needs to be happy: a charming husband, two well-off daughters, and a job as a dentist. And yet, when a stranger suggests the idea of finding a lover (or several!) via a dating app, she is quickly convinced.

“Iris and the Men” more or less takes up the recipe for successAntoinette in the Cévennes, less rural landscapes. Laure Calamy, who won the César for best actress for her role as Antoinette, is still just as moving and funny. The heroine follows her desire and takes the risk of getting lost in adventures whose rules she always dictates; The numerous intimate scenes may upset some viewers, but they are shot without rudeness and are of course necessary for the story. The film also ends with a particularly successful musical comedy scene with supposed hints of kitsch.

♦ Priscilla **

by Sofia Coppola

American film, 1h53

“Iris and the Men”, “Priscilla”, “I, Captain”: in cinemas from January 3rd

At 14, Priscilla Beaulieu realizes every groupie’s dream: She meets Elvis Presley, who at 24 is already at the peak of his fame, and exchanges a chaste kiss with him. The King of Rock and Roll is delighted and agrees to save her and asks for her hand in marriage. After the wedding, the dream ends: Priscilla gradually discovers her husband’s absences, infidelities and addictions and finds herself as a housewife in his magnificent mansion. After ten years, one child and many disappointments, she makes the difficult decision to leave him.

Sofia Coppola does not reinvent herself in this film: she adopts the languid, not to say atonal, style that characterized her earlier films. Fortunately, the director is unique in describing the deceptive feelings of youth and he succeeds in creating the mansion king, full of soft pillows and shimmering silk, a surreal decor that matches its protagonist’s daydreams. In the role of Priscilla, Caille Spaeny is convincing with her delicate physique and touching naivety, but her monotonous interpretation makes the character difficult to read.

♦ I, captain *

by Matteo Garrone

Film Italy, 2 h 03

“Iris and the Men”, “Priscilla”, “I, Captain”: in cinemas from January 3rd

We are used to hearing about migrants arriving in Europe, but the media says very little about the often Homeric journeys that take them from their countries of origin to the shores of the Old Continent. This makes the ambition of Matteo Garrone, who was inspired by the story of young migrants to imagine a journey from Senegal to Italy, all the more noble. Unfortunately, the chosen form of adventure film causes a certain unease: it might have been wiser to treat this topic with a little more sobriety.

The main character, brilliantly played by the young Senegalese actor Seydoux Sarr, encounters every obstacle imaginable: fraudsters, the desert, the Libyan police… his innocence and his illusions are tested, which gives the film a nice dimension of an initiation film . Furthermore, the dreamlike scenes and bright colors delight the eye, even if they undermine the harshness of the subject.
