It premiered in Madrid on Wednesday Burro, a monologue based on classic texts about chicks, performed by the company “Ay Teatro”. From the Golden Ass by Apuleius to the Platero by Juan Ramón Jiménez, via Don Quixote, Shakespeare, Ovid or the fables of Aesop, Phaedrus, La Fontaine, Iriarte and Samaniego. Versatile and multiple award-winning, Carlos Hipólito (Madrid, 1956) is a perfectionist and lover of horror films.
You have already performed “The Tale of the Horse” by Tolstoy. Now he’s making donkeys. This is clearly a downgrade.
Yes, many will interpret it as a descent into the tier ranks. But no, because it turns out that I really enjoy playing the donkey. It is a very special and very cute animal.
Are you good at making a fool of yourself?
Well, I really like this character created by Álvaro Tato. It flatters me and reminds me of donkeys I have known in all areas of my life. [ríe].
The aim of the work is to explore the relationship between animals and humans. Which of the two will win?
In my opinion the donkey, but the public will draw their conclusions. He is a 6,000-year-old donkey who lived on the planet before the strange monkeys who later became called humans conquered the world with clubs, and he explains to us what his relationship with humans has been throughout history. From then on, the work asks a question: Who is the animal between the man and the donkey? Personally, I have the answer very clearly.
He makes 14 characters, almost all of them are chicks. Which one do you identify with the most?
The donkey narrator is the one that amuses me the most. But I also create human characters who appear: maid, thief. And of many donkeys: the old donkey, the donkey’s mother, the donkey’s cousin…
He has always advocated jumping from one genre to another, putting yourself at risk and not staying in your comfort zone.
The thing is that I like to explore all aspects of this profession and move into places where there is some challenge. What better way to play Kafka’s “The Trial” than with a singing donkey? [ríe}.
¿Dónde escucha actualmente más rebuznos?
El burro de Sancho Panza cuenta en un momento de la obra que fue a la hacienda de Don Quijote, el hidalgo, y que la encontró en ruinas, pero que la biblioteca estaba intacta. Entonces se comió todos los libros, y esos libros le dieron el don de la palabra. Y le dice el burro a su sombra: «Pero ya sabes que me callo cuando hay humanos cerca, porque no quiero acabar en el circo o en el Congreso». Ahí te he contestado.
Lleva 45 años de oficio. ¿Va aprendiendo?
El otro día pensaba: «Realmente yo ya no es que tenga tablas, es que tengo serrín en las venas, de la cantidad de madera que he pisado. Sí que voy aprendiendo, y me voy dando cuenta de que me queda menos tiempo para todo lo que tengo que aprender todavía, porque cuanto más sabes más te das cuenta de tus carencias».
Presume de que la vanidad le resbala. No conoce el paro. ¿Se encuentra estupendo?
Estupendo en general no me encuentro. Me hizo gracia una persona que decía en una entrevista: «Yo básicamente me detesto». No es mi caso, pero tampoco estoy tan encantado de conocerme. El tiempo me ha dado herramientas, práctica, experiencia para poder ir desarrollando cada vez mejor la materia prima e irme comunicando con más facilidad con el público, que al final es de lo que se trata. Pero también me doy cuenta de que todavía hay muchas cosas que no sé hacer, y que me gustaría hacer mejor.
Ha hecho todo tipo de personajes. ¿Le falta monja o asesino en serie?
Sí. Y mira, Heidi no lo he hecho. Una vez me dijo un director muy simpático que me iba a dar ese personaje, Heidi, porque pensaba que ya podía hacer todo. Estaría bien, ahora que está tan de moda lo de travestirse.
Siempre será recordado por ser el narrador de Cuéntame cómo pasó, en TVE. ¿Qué le ha dado Carlitos Alcántara?
Después de 23 años… Y empezamos pensando: «¿Llegaremos a una segunda temporada?» Carlitos me ha dado una cosa estupenda. El reconocimiento de un montón de gente haciendo un personaje solo con la voz. Siempre pensé que la voz en off de Cuéntame sería un trabajo muy anónimo, y sin embargo se convirtió en un personaje más. Eso me ha regalado el cariño de mucha gente. Y, sobre todo, me ha permitido estar en una serie que ha hecho historia y, como no salía en imagen, poder hacer a la vez otro montón de series donde sí aparecía. Ha sido un trabajo precioso.
Ha dicho que a los políticos no les interesa el teatro. ¿Está seguro de que algunos no entrenan en casa?
Sí, lo intentan a veces, con muy poca fortuna, porque en la política hay muy malos actores. Se les nota mucho cuando mienten [ríe].
What’s the most exotic thing you’ve ever done on stage? Dancing in a tulle tutu in “Billy Elliot”?
Yes. Dressing up as a miner and putting on a white tulle tutu to pirouette like Billy Elliot’s father was probably one of the most unusual things I’ve ever had to do.
What awaits you after Donkey?
Donkey will take me a year because we will cover the entire peninsula and islands. Then I’ll do another theater performance and hope that a very cool TV series will come out of it that we can’t talk about yet.
And do you prepare something in ballet after the miner in the tutu?
In ballet, no [ríe]. In the ballet I hung up my shoes for the time being and also loosened my bun, which was pulling me a lot.
